A complete guide to flying with your pets

Rectangle 1888@

Pets are part of the family, and we all hate having to leave them behind.

Even in the hands of an experienced boarding organization, your pets can experience separation anxiety and feel stressed about being abandoned in a new place. This can result in your dog or other pets becoming withdrawn, depressed and even refusing to eat.

While it is possible to fly with your pet on several commercial airlines, the experience can be extremely traumatic and dangerous.

The good news is that there is a solution! One that will not only leave your pets feeling safe and happy, but will leave them wanting more. That is why we take every step possible to make sure that your pets can join you on your adventures without the trauma of having to travel alone in the cargo hold. Chartering a private jet not only eliminates that stress but means that your pet can travel in the cabin with you. Here are a few tips and reminders for flying with your pets so that you can travel in style and enjoy the entire experience together.

Is it safe to fly with my pet?

A flight can be a traumatic experience for a pet, especially if they are placed in the cargo hold. This is why your pets join you in the cabin. That way, your calming presence will be there, they don’t need to suffer separation anxiety, and you can keep an eye on them. What is more, is that they can roam the cabin and turn the experience into something exciting and enjoyable for everyone.

Some pets may have pre-existing conditions that may make the flight risky. We advise that you always consult a veterinarian before taking your pet on a flight. Make sure to do this at least 10 days before travel for the most up-to-date information. You should also ask for their advice on any medication that you may need, and whether you should feed your pet before flying.

Can my pet fly with me in the cabin?

Absolutely! Unlike a commercial flight, our pet-friendly private jet charters let them travel with you in person. Whether your pet is an emotional support dog, a cat, bird, or reptile, they will be in the cabin with you.

What is the difference between flying my pet in the cabin and cargo hold?

Transporting your pet in the cabin means that they can experience the entire journey with you, by your side. Your animal’s welfare and comfort are our top priority.

When your pet is put into the cargo hold, there are many unknown variables that you have no control over. They need to remain in a small cage throughout the entire flight. Temperatures may vary in the cargo hold and objects may shift and fall making loud noises.

Some commercial flights let me bring my pet into the cabin. What is the difference between that and a jet?

Some commercial flights will let you bring your pet with you into the cabin provided that they meet certain criteria. Your pets typically need to be stored in a carrier and under your seat. And so, if you’re wondering whether your large dog can fly in the cabin, the answer on a commercial flight is no. Only small dogs and cats can join you. This limits which pets and how many of them you can bring with you.

What is more, is that they need to remain within their cramped crate the entire time. This means that you cannot personally reassure them, and being surrounded by strangers can cause additional stress.

By chartering a private jet, your pet can come to you for cuddles and reassurance and won’t remain in a claustrophobic environment full of strangers. Once they have adjusted to the new environment, they can explore, relax and enjoy the ride.

How many pets can I fly with?

There is no limitation on the number of pets you may bring with you when using a Private Jet. You’re able to bring the whole family!

How big can my dog be to fly in the cabin?

Unlike commercial aircraft which only allow small animals that can fit under your seat, we don’t have a size limitation on your furry friends. Whether it is a Great Dane or a Chihuahua, all sizes are welcome.

What documents do I need to fly with my pet?

Depending on whether you’re flying locally or internationally, requirements may change. But the usual checklist for flying with your pets consists of:

  • Pet passport
  • Valid vaccinations (particularly rabies)
  • Has had tapeworm treatment in the case of dogs
  • Microchip documentation
  • Fit for travel animal health certificate

We work closely with operators, airports, and other agencies to give you the smoothest, most hassle-free experience possible in each location.

You can contact our advisory team for any questions or concerns that you may have.

What about flying with my pets in the UK and EU?

In addition to the above requirements, there are some things that you should be aware of.

Since the UK left the European Union (Brexit) there have been some changes to the pet travel document requirements for private flights with pets between the two. This impacted flights from Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) into Northern Ireland and the EU. Unfortunately, the old UK pet passport is no longer recognized as a valid entry document. Luckily, if you are travelling from the EU to Great Britain you may continue to use the EU pet passport.

If you are travelling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland or the EU, you will need an Animal Health Certificate that has been issued no more than 10 days before your flight.

Can I buy an extra seat on a plane for my dog?

No need! Unlike commercial flights, we don’t require your dog to wait under the seat. They can have their pick of seats once they are on board and safely in the cabin with you.

When can a puppy fly on a plane?

Puppies need to be 8 weeks old before they are allowed on a plane.

How long will my pet have to wait before boarding?

Your pet can stay with you throughout the journey. Plus, they don’t need to wait in long queues and experience the stress of the hustle and bustle of the airport. We only require you to arrive 15 minutes before your boarding time and use private terminals. This means that you don’t have to queue at baggage claim, check-in, or boarding, and can pass through security with speed and complete privacy. This takes a lot of stress off your pet and makes the entire process much smoother and easier. Unlike commercial flights where they are likely to wait excessive periods before embarking and disembarking from the flight.

How do I reduce stress and anxiety for my pet during the flight?

By bringing your pet with you into the cabin, you’ve already eliminated the most traumatic parts of travel. But being in a new place with strange noises and smells can still cause anxiety in some animals. Do the following to help relieve their stress:

If you have a dog, take them on a short walk before the flight. As you only need to arrive 15 minutes before departure there is plenty of time to get out any excess energy they may have.

Bring stress-relievers. Toys and blankets that have a familiar smell can be extremely relieving for your dog or cat and give them a sense of familiarity and comfort.

Should I give my dog or cat a sedative when flying?

Most animals can travel quite easily without the need for a sedative. However, very anxious cats and dogs can find the experience extremely stressful. Sedatives may help to mitigate some of this stress, but they are not always safe. There is a risk of creating respiratory and cardiovascular problems as your pet is exposed to increased altitude pressures. Additionally, they can alter your pet’s ability to balance. If you are considering giving your pet a tranquiliser or sedative, make sure that you consult with your veterinarian beforehand.

I still have more questions. Can you help me?

Absolutely! Our advisory team is available 24/7 to source private flights for you and your pet. Upon booking, we will assist you in checking pet travel regulations and documentation so you can travel worry-free.

Flexibility, safety, comfort and peace of mind are so important when travelling with your pets. Flying can be a traumatic experience for both pets and their owners. There is no doubt that flying with your pet in the cabin on a private jet is one of the best solutions if you want to travel with your companions.
